BIBLE STUDIES

June 10, 2028

Do Bible Studies and Devotionals devoted to The Pilgrim's Progress fall into bibliolatry, worshipping an idol of a book rather than the God to whom they ought to point?

MISSIONARY USE OF THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS IN A POST-SECULAR WEST

2020

The Pilgrim's Progress is far less significant than its heyday of missionary translations of the nineteenth century, yet it still has a lingering evangelistic presence. I look at a book and a movie as exhibits of this phenomenon, asking if their representation of the Vanity Fair episode fits current holistic gospel concerns

REPRESENTING WOMEN IN ADAPTATIONS OF THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS

Spring 2020

Exploring text, illustrations and even songs, I ask how women are represented in adaptations of The Pilgrim's Progress, and how it fits in with Jesus' recognition of women. Accessible at the EMS website.

SINGING THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS

writing in progress

Bunyan's gathered church in Bedford did not go in for congregational singing. However, The Pilgrim's Progress is full of song. This article draws on theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer's concept of the 'polyphony of life' to critically examine contemporary Christian albums recorded on the book, including Jim Winder, The World in Lights, and The Neal Morse Band.

MARRIAGE AND THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS

writing in progress

A book that famously begins with a husband and father abandoning his family seems hardly promising for reflection upon the good of marriage. But not only does Bunyan quickly edit his text in a third edition (1679), but he also makes room to marriage in Part Two (1684). And contemporary reception has continued that trajectory with an adaptation for married couples. What does The Pilgrim's Progress have to teach on marriage?
