Mosaic, Pastiche or Bricolage? "Wrong" Illustrations 4


The misplaced illustration depicts 'Tender Conscience,' who is the hero of PP Part III. Interestingly, although soon and then always acknowledged to not have been written by Bunyan, this Part III has a long life of being bound with Parts I and II in collected volumes. Perhaps it is testament to its popularity, and that readers don't necessarily read editorial advice that Tender Conscience is depicted with three full page plates in a book that doesn't even include Part II at all! Was the artist drawing on memories of their own reading without discriminating between Parts? Did the publisher go with the best illustrations or maybe just the full commissioned batch to brighten up the book, even if they don't really belong? Here are the other two:
